Manifold Cookers at Up Island Church

The Manifold Cookers is the family band descending from Edie and Andy “The Old Roadhog” Konesni of Islesboro and Appleton, Maine.

Annadeene Konesni Fowler and Bennett Konesni are brother and sister. Growing up they spent many weekends travelling with their parents Edie and Andy to Bluegrass festivals and old-time fiddling conventions. It was on these trips that Andy would wire up a Kielbasa and a can of beans to the exhaust manifold of their car, and dinner would be hot upon arrival, the aromas mingling with the sounds of fiddles and mandolins picking in the parking lot.

With the creation of the Manifold Cookers they continue this tradition, bringing their spouses into the fold to create a supergroup that bridges three local musical families (Konesnis, Fowlers and Gawlers.) The band is made up two active duos: Tom and Annadeene Fowler of the Leaky Boot Jug Band and the Hay Pond Rounders; and Edith and Bennett who play as duo called “Edith and Bennett” and also with the Gawler Family Band.

Many on Islesboro have heard some combination of the family at one time or another. This performance brings us all together again in celebration of Andy near the 10th anniversary of his death, sharing his love for his family, good music and Islesboro. Friendships and memories run deep in this up tempo, toe tapping group- you need not to have known him to enjoy his continued ripples in this world.

The Manifold Cookers will play at the Free Will Baptist Church (the Up Island Church) on June 11 at 7pm. Tickets are by suggested donation of$5/adult ticket and $10/family.

TRANSPORTATION:
If there is a group of folks from the mainland who want to go, Annadeene will work on island transportation from the last ferry to the church. Message me to let me know if this interests you!

There will be a Quicksilver back to the mainland after the performance.

Boston Worksong Workshop

Worksong Workshop with Edith & Bennett @ TBA

Join Edith Gawler and Bennett Konesni for an evening of food and music. As we sing we'll shuck garlic for a local farm, helping them prepare for this season's planting.

During the workshop we'll:

  • Learn old and new songs that make work go faster, smoother, and with more fun.
  • Explore tips and tricks for improving the power and dynamism of your own voice
  • Discuss how to include music into your own work

Worksongs are a tool that has been used by farmers, fishermen, sailors- workers of all stripes- to help structure the rhythm of work, pass the time, improve the efficiency and unify crews. Young farmers today are once again learning the art of the worksong as a tool on modern small farms.

This workshop is open to singers of any ability. Most important is a curiosity and enthusiasm for the idea and a willingness to learn by ear without sheet music.

Bennett is co-founder of Sylvester Manor Educational Farm on Shelter Island, NY and Duckback Farm in Maine and runs the website worksongs.org. He received a prestigious TJ Watson Fellowship to study worksongs for one year in 7 countries, and has used and taught worksongs on tall ships and small farms for twenty years.

Edith grew up singing as a member of the legendary Gawler Family of Maine and brings her cheerful demeanor and soulful Alto to the fore when out in the fields with Bennett. She leads and follows hundreds of songs and will make even the crustiest curmudgeon laugh with her improvised verses.

Tickets $25, purchased online.

Space is limited so please sign up early.
